Practice Before You Play
If you’re new to golf, practicing before your round will help you feel more comfortable. Arrive early and:
- Hit a bucket of balls at our driving range to warm up.
- Practice your short game on our putting and chipping greens.
- Familiarize yourself with your clubs so you feel confident stepping up to the first tee.
Booking a Tee Time
For beginners, the time of day you play matters. Try to book a tee time when the course is less crowded to avoid pressure from experienced golfers playing behind you.
Golf Course Etiquette for Beginners
Following these etiquette tips will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for you and others on the course:
Before Your Round
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in and be ready for your tee time.
Pace of Play
- Keep up with the group ahead of you – Aim for 12-15 minutes per hole. If you’re falling behind, pick up your ball and move to the next hole.
During the Round
- Be ready to hit when it’s your turn – Plan your shot while others are playing.
- Limit pre-shot routines – Take one practice swing and play efficiently.
- Stay quiet and still when someone is hitting.
- Don’t walk in another player’s “line” on the putting green – step over it to avoid leaving scuff marks.
- Rake the bunkers after playing from the sand.
- Keep golf carts at least 30 feet from the green.
- Maintain a safe distance – Stand at least 10 feet away from anyone swinging.
Basic Golf Rules
How Scoring Works
Each hole has a par, which represents the expected number of strokes for a skilled player:
- Par 3 – Short holes, typically under 250 yards
- Par 4 – Medium-length holes, typically range from 250-450 yards
- Par 5 – Long holes, typically over 450 yards
Your goal is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible. If a hole is Par 4 and you take four strokes, you’ve “made par.”
Teeing Off
- Begin each hole by hitting from between the tee markers.
Order of Play
- The player farthest from the hole always hits first, regardless of where they are on the course.
On the Putting Green
- You may mark, lift, and clean your ball before putting.
- Repair your ball marks (the indentation, or in some cases crater, caused by the ball striking the surface).
- Decide whether to leave, remove, or have the flagstick attended while putting.
We look forward to welcoming you to Mid Vallee Golf Course!
